eRecruit is the GNWT’s electronic recruitment system. It allows applicants to view job openings online, apply online and track their status on job openings. All applicants are asked to apply to jobs through the system.

Use these instructions to successfully apply for jobs with the GNWT through eRecruit.

We recommend that you open these instructions in a separate Internet window as you go through the online application process.

If you are a GNWT employee, applying as an employee gives you access to all job openings, including those that are limited to GNWT employees. It also automatically registers you, logs you in and pulls in your profile information.

Types of Competitions

Job advertisements provide information on the type of GNWT competition. Interested applicants are urged to read the advertisement carefully.

Limited - Open to GNWT indeterminate/Term Employees Only

These jobs are only open to people who are indeterminate or term employees of the GNWT at any point during the competition posting period.

Limited to a Specific Geographical Area or Community

These jobs are only open to residents of a specific geographical area or community in the NWT.

Types of Employment

Indeterminate

An indeterminate position has no end date of employment.

Indeterminate Relief Workers

An Indeterminate Relief Worker position is where there are no established hours on a daily, weekly or monthly basis and the incumbent may be required to report to work on an as-and-when required basis for facilities where services operate on a daily basis throughout the entire year.

When you accept an Indeterminate Relief Worker position, you are making a commitment to be reasonably available at the last minute to cover shifts on evenings, weekends, statutory holidays and during peak vacation times for regular employees such as summer, Christmas and spring break.

Term

Term positions are positions that are filled through the competition process for a specified length of time after which the person is no longer a GNWT employee.

Seasonal

Seasonal positions are indeterminate positions where the employee only works part of the year.

Eligibility List

An eligibility list may be created from this competition to fill future term and indeterminate positions. This means your application will be kept on file for a reasonable period of time, usually six months, and will be considered for similar positions.

Anticipatory Staffing

Anticipatory staffing is where vacancies are anticipated in the future, usually in the next year, and the recruitment process is initiated in advance to streamline the competition process when a vacancy occurs.

We encourage you to apply on competitions that you are interested in, eligible for, and for which you feel qualified.

Applicants must be eligible to work in Canada.

Staffing for all GNWT competitions is carried out in accordance with the Affirmative Action Policy. For more information please see section 101 - Staffing and the Affirmative Action Policy in the Human Resource Manual.

We encourage online application through eRecruit. We also accept applications by e-mail, fax, mail, or in person. Send your application by the closing date. Applications received after 11:59 pm on the closing date are considered late and will not be considered.

When you apply outside of eRecruit, please make sure to:

  • Put the position title and the competition number on your application.
  • Submit a separate resume and covering letter for each competition.
  • Clearly identify your priority status per the Affirmative Action Policy (one of Indigenous Aboriginal, Non-Indigenous Aboriginal, Disabled, and Resident Woman if applying on senior management or non-traditional job).
  • Read the job advertisement and position description to make sure that the position is what you want and that your skills and abilities match those required.
  • Provide a cover letter that clearly explains how you meet the skills and abilities for the competition.
  • Provide an up-to-date resume that contains all of your relevant education, experience and accomplishments.
  • Clearly indicate the start and end dates (day/month/year) of your work experience.
  • Highlight in your resume why you are suited to that position.
  • Keep a record of the competition number as well as the contact information in case you have an inquiry later on.
  • Provide the complete address, telephone numbers and email address where you may be reached.

If you have specific questions about the competition you applied on, please use the contact information found at the bottom of each advertisement.

Screening Applicants

After the closing date, resumes are screened to determine who meets the qualifications. Candidates are short listed for interviews in accordance with the Affirmative Action policy and qualifications.

The Selection Panel

The interviews are usually handled by a selection panel of two to three members, which includes:

  • The supervisor of the position
  • Human resource professionals
  • A technical expert

Selection of the Successful Candidate

During the interview, candidates are assessed on education, experience, knowledge, skills/abilities and personal suitability. Other suitability considerations include reference check, and criminal record checks. After all factors are taken into consideration, the most suitable candidate is selected.

Staffing Appeal Process

If you feel that a procedural error during the competition process negatively affected how you were considered as an applicant, you are eligible to appeal the decision if you are:

a) an employee of the GNWT at the time you applied for the position; or
b) an Affirmative Action candidate.
