Mandatory Leave Without Pay (MLWOP) & Mandatory Leave With Pay (MLWP)
NEW for 2008! Previously, eligible employees took five (5) days of MLWOP over the Christmas season. Beginning in 2008, employees will now take four (4) days of MLWOP and one (1) day of MLWP over the Christmas season.
What are MLWOP days?
MLWOP days are four (4) days of leave that apply to “non-continuous” employees. Non-continuous employees have no operational requirement to be at work over the Christmas and New Year season.
If you are unsure if you are a non-continuous employee, please ask your supervisor.
What is a MLWP day?
A Mandatory Leave With Pay is one day of leave that applies to “non-continuous” employees. Non continuous employees have no operational requirement to be at work over the Christmas and New Year season.
If you are unsure if you are a non-continuous employee, please ask your supervisor.
MLWOP/MLWP For "Continuous" Employees
Continuous Employees are employees who may have to work during the Christmas/New Years Season due to operational requirements. If you are a continuous employee, you are eligible for four (4) MLWOP days and one (1) MLWP day, which you can take at any time throughout the year, as long as operational requirements permit. Remember to ask your supervisor before taking a MLWOP/MLWP day.
You must enter these leave days into the Self Service Timesheet yourself. The codes are:
LO7 - MLWOP (Mandatory Leave Without Pay) (maximum of 4 days)
LO9 - MLWP (Mandatory Leave With Pay) (maximum of 1 day)
If you are unsure if you are a "continuous" employee, please ask your supervisor.
Will I get paid for these days of Mandatory Leave?
Yes. Throughout the year, a small portion of each of your paycheques is put aside to cover the 4 days you take as Mandatory Leave Without Pay. You can see this value on the View Paycheque option of Self Service. Under the Earnings section, it is described as "Mandtry Lv".
You also get paid for the 1 day you take as Mandatory Leave With Pay.

Am I entitled to winter bonus days during the Christmas break?
If you have requested and are granted annual leave between October 1 2008 and March 31 2009, you are given one winter bonus day, to a maximum of four, for each five consecutive days of Annual leave taken between October 1 and March 31.
Annual leave and statutory holidays are counted when determining eligibility for a winter bonus day. The annual leave and statutory holiday must be consecutive days.
You are entitled to the winter bonus day(s) AFTER using five annual leave days or a combination of annual leave and statutory holidays (two annual leave days and three statutory holidays).
MLWOP/MLWP days are not counted when determining eligibility for a winter bonus day.
Lieu days taken are not counted when determining eligibility for a winter bonus day.
If annual leave and statutory holidays count, but not MLWOP, how do I count for a winter bonus day?
The example in the Calendar shows two possibilities for winter bonus days. The example uses a combination of consecutive annual leave and statutory holidays to be eligible for a winter bonus day. The annual leave and statutory holidays must be used before you are eligible for a winter bonus day.
Do I have to enter a Leave Code for Winter Bonus days?
YES. The Code is called Winter Bonus. Enter the number of hours you take for Winter Bonus on your timesheet, and chose the Winter Bonus code. Remember to also enter your Annual Leave hours that entitle you to take a Winter Bonus Day.
What if I am put on “standby” over the Christmas break?
If your supervisor requests you be put on standby, you will receive standby pay. If you are called into work for some reason, you will receive callback pay. Enter the applicable code and hours you worked in the Self Service system.
What if I am called into work over the Christmas break?
If your supervisor requests you to come to work, you will be paid the applicable overtime rate. However, unless your supervisor requests you to work, you should not be working during the Christmas break. If you do not have supervisor approval to work overtime, you will not be eligible for paid overtime.
