GNWT Training Calendar
The Employee Development and Workforce Planning Unit, of the Department of Human Resources, coordinates a range of learning and development opportunities for GNWT employees to help ensure employees have the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities for effective job performance. A regularly-updated training calendar includes a variety of courses and workshops that are facilitated by content experts either employed by the Department of Human Resources or contracted specifically to deliver the course or workshop.
The following is a list of internal courses that are offered regularly through the training calendar:
Labour Relations Training for Managers in the GNWT
These two-day training workshops provide managers and supervisors with the valuable information to assist in managing employees and includes such topics as progressive discipline, medical termination, abandonment of position, suspension pending investigation and attendance management. Training sessions are recommended for front-line supervisors, managers, and senior management.
This is a half day training session that provides hiring managers and selection committee members with the knowledge to be able to electronically initiate staffing requests, draft job posters, approve job openings online, view resumes for their job openings on-line and screen the applicants on their competitions on-line. This training is facilitated by Management and Recruitment Services.
Orientation for new GNWT Employees and Summer Students
A half-day training session for new GNWT employees and summer students includes information that assists new employees in becoming familiar with the GNWT. During the session participants are provided information on where to find GNWT policies, common practices in the GNWT and resources available to employees. There is also information on Occupational Health and Safety, the Technology Service Centre (TSC) and Self Service – PeopleSoft .
Job Description Writing
This is a half-day Job Description Writing Workshop.
Participants will learn the fundamental principles of how to develop concise, accurate Job Descriptions (JDs) according to standard GNWT format. The various uses for JDs, the specific details/standards of the format, detailed information on best writing practices for a JD, and handy glossary and 'cheat sheet' tools will be discussed and used. We invite participants to bring a JD that they are currently working on (though not their own position); if you don't have a specific JD, we will provide job information to you and get you writing.
